If this project really needs 100+ tapes digitising then go and buy a Canopus ADVC300.

Prem Pro is a beast of a program and I wouldnt recommend it to a beginner. Why? He's not technical at all apparently. Which leads me neatly onto: Premiers Pro 1.5. If you have a fast enough machine you can let the CPU do some of the legwork and use a cheap pci capture card as recommended before but even then there will likely still be some filtering involved.Ī stand alone recorder would be easiest but limits you on editing options. One of these devices should have a time base corrector onboard. Assuming you have variable quality source material you really need a top quality VHS deck and a top quality firewire DV bridge. Its not easy, and its not cheap which is why you can spend so much money on proper kit. "Instantly convert all your old VHS tapes onto hi-tech DVDs easily with this USB egg whisk!" Please dont think I am having a go at you - its just that your friend has been duped by yer typical computer gear advertising. Not a great combo really, and as !4004 pointed out you have the wrong gear. He's not technical at all, and I'm totally worthless when it comes to A/V work. I know everything's physically connected properly because the capture works fine (discounting occasional audio synching problems) through Studio, but I couldn't get Premiere to recognize the DVC 80 - it always displayed "Capture Device Offline".Ī) Is the DVC 80 just a proprietary POS? Does Premiere dislike analog capture? What's going on? Now he's trying to learn Adobe Premiere so he can manually sync up the audio since Pinnacle Studio is ass and won't edit audio, but Premiere won't recognize the input through the DVC 80.
The current setup we've got him going with is running the VCR -> DVC80 (his sole capture device) -> Pinnacle Studio Quickstart, which has worked ok for some clips, but on others the audio starts to lag behind the video by several seconds (and gets worse as time goes on - this is the second problem).
He's not technical at all, and while I'm good with computers, I'm totally worthless when it comes to A/V work. I'm trying to help a friend who has like 100 VHS tapes he needs to digitize and burn to DVD for archiving and editing.

This is kind of a compound problem, so feel free to chime in if you can help solve either. I've never been to the A/V club before, so be gentle - it's my first time.
